Most lawyers feel the pressure to deliver legal services that are better, faster, and more cost-effective than ever before. In that environment, generative “AI” tools are increasingly promoted as the solution to many of the modern lawyer’s challenges. It can be tempting to adopt these tools quickly, believing they will streamline workflows, enhance productivity, and strengthen client service.
Designed specifically for lawyers, this session, presented by Devan Marr, invites participants to pause and critically examine how the duty of competence applies in the age of AI. Drawing from his experience reviewing professional liability claims, Devan provides a practical and grounded perspective on where AI use can go wrong and how those missteps can land a file in the claims department.
Rather than joining the AI hype uncritically, this webinar offers a clear baseline of what AI is and what it is not and explores how misuse, overreliance, or misunderstanding of generative AI can expose lawyers to professional liability, reputational harm, and ethical risk. It highlights how the promise of efficiency can obscure significant professional obligations, particularly around competence, supervision, and client protection.
Participants will leave with a sharper understanding of how to integrate AI responsibly into their practice, and how to avoid the traps that can quietly undermine both their files and their professional standing.

Speaker: Devan Marr ,
Research Lawyer, LAWPRO
Devan is a research lawyer in LAWPRO’s claims department. A professional law nerd, he provides practical strategic advice and litigation support to internal and external counsel on whatever weird or niche professional liability issues that invariably walk through the door.
Before LAWPRO, Devan began his practice on the plaintiff’s side before switching to primarily insurance defence and coverage matters in Toronto where he maintained a select plaintiff’s practice (to keep him honest).
Devan is a board member for the Canadian Defence Lawyers and Vice-Chair of its CLE Committee. He has also obtained his Associate of Risk Management designation.
When not asking, “what about this issue?” at the office, or guest lecturing at law schools and conferences, Devan can be spotted riding around town on a cargo bike, brewing (mostly decent) beer, and woodworking in his basement
